phone diary

I made a tool that can take images and resize + rotate them to fit the layout of a 1-sheet printable 8-page zine. In terms of the images that I chose to plug into this zine-maker, I wanted to create a phone diary that catalogues all the cellphones I’ve owned and how long I’ve used each for.

With the zine-maker, I’m able to easily swap out the information inside to create a unique phone diary for each of our experiences. However, the repeating parts stay the same... the repeating purchases, the quick turnaround in tech obsolescence, and the heap of electronic phone waste on the cover and back. I created a version for a friend’s phone diary, and it could be an ongoing collection archived into a .json file, essentially creating our own archive of electronic landfill.

Initially, I set the zine size to letter size, but it was very difficult to read the factoid texts on the back cover, so I scaled up to tabloid size.

This javascript tool builds on top of the p5 and p5.riso library. When clicked, the canvas exports the different layers that can be printed out via different colors on the risograph.
